3. Some History of Carpet Bags - why are they so-called?

I have called the bags on this page "carpet style" because they are not actually made of carpet as is the case with true carpet bags.

Today bags in this style which are actually made of carpet - often beautiful silk rugs with Eastern style designs - can still be bought but they cost many times more than the bags here. But that wasn't always the case.

From the 1840s onwards in the United States, the creation of the railways made travel easier for ordinary folk, who looked for ways to carry a few belongings. Carpet bags were manufactured and sold to fulfil this need and just about everyone who travelled

The original carpetbags were practical items made to hold the belongings of people moving South at the end of the American Civil War where poverty offered many opportunities to those from the North. Nevertheless, as is often the case in small communities, these new arrivals were strangers and therefore not readily trusted. They were named "carpetbaggers" after the bags they brought with them.

The term "carpetbagger" is still used to mean someone who can't be trusted in business. In 1961 Harold Robbins published a blockbuster of the same name which was made into a film in 1964.

The use of a cavernous carpet bag by Mary Poppins gave them renewed popularity today.
